The Gorge Grown Farmers’ Market has REALLY taken off this summer. Both weekly attendance and sales are up about 30% from last year. Thank you for making this market such a success!! If you have not had a chance to come down yet, come see for yourself what everyone is talking about. Last week Ben Stenn from Celilo showed us how to make delicious Cherry Tomato Bruschetta. In case you missed it, the recipe is featured as the recipe of the week. The calendar for August is looking amazing. August 5th is a celebration of bike and walking to market and will have lots of activities and events around biking and healthy families. On August 12, the market is proud to be hosting Green Drinks and a discussion about local composting operations and needs. Come join the fun...
This week we are welcoming over 25 vendors at the market with a wide variety of dinner foods(including a new vendor, Henni’s from White Salmon serving up yummy curries), fresh fruits(netarines, peaches, blueberries, raspberries, cherries, etc.), breads, tarts, beef, worm compost and vegetables (tomatoes are here!! - along with fresh greens, squash, beets, carrots, green beans, kale, potatoes, etc.). Debit cards and SNAP cards can be used at the INFO booth. We have an incentive program this season also that allows us to match your SNAP dollars with up to free $5 to expand your purchasing power. Recipes: Cherry Tomato Bruschetta
Our chef-extraordinaire volunteer Lindsay is out for the week, so this week’s featured recipe is from another chef-extraordinaire in the Gorge, Ben Stenn from Celilo Restaurant. Ben cooked this amazing dish last week at the Gorge Grown Farmers’ Market. Try it at home and enjoy! - GGFM Team
CHERRY TOMATO BRUSCHETTA
Presented by Celilo Restaurant, Chef: Ben Stenn
Serves 4-6 as an appetizer
1 clove garlic sliced in half lengthwise
¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
1 baguette, slice into ½ inch rounds
1 pint cherry tomatoes, halved lengthwise
½ large Walla Walla sweet onion, diced
2 medium cloves garlic, finely-sliced crosswise
handful of fresh basil leaves, sliced into ribbons
2 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
Rub each baguette slice on one side with halved garlic clove. Brush lightly with oil. Brown lightly in batches by placing oiled-side down, in a single layer, in a skillet over medium-high heat. Let cool. Toss garlic and onion together and, in the same skillet, lightly sauté in the 2 Tbsp. of oil over medium heat. Remove from heat and add tomatoes. Allow the residual heat to warm the tomatoes. Add sliced basil and gently mix once more.
Spoon onto prepared baguette slices. Serve immediately.
CELILO RESTAURANT is committed to using local, sustainably-produced ingredients. Come celebrate every season’s bounty at the Celilo Restaurant. Reservations accepted but not necessary: 541.386.5710, www.celilorestaurant.com, 16 Oak Street, downtown Hood River
**Also be on the lookout for the next chef demo at the GGFM! Mark it down on your calendar now – August 19th at 5:30. Kathy Watson from Nora’s Table will be putting on a demo.**
