Gorge Soup Event! Celilo Restaurant, Feb 7
gorgesoup@gmail.com

Gorge Soup is a dinner where people buy tickets, come to dinner, eat soup with up to 50 other Gorge community members and meanwhile listen to quick presentations given by people starting business, creating nonprofits, or developing community solutions. At the end of the dinner, everyone votes on who had the best project/business/solution/idea, and the winner gets the ticket money. Really, it’s a fun way to learn about what great things are happening in our community and support these ideas.
When and Where
The next Gorge Soup dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7. Due to the success of the first Gorge Soup dinner on November 7, 2011, we are working to add more dates.
How much?
Tickets are $35. Of that $35, $5 will go to cover the cost of the soup and $1-$2 will go to covering odds and ends (paper, printing expenses, supplies, etc.) The rest of the ticket price, $28, will go to whomever wins the vote for the evening. Therefore, if 50 people attend, someone will receive $1,400. That’s a big grant for one night’s dinner.
Note: Alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the bar.
How do I buy a ticket?
50 tickets will be available via Brown Bag Tickets. To buy your ticket now, go to: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/206388
What types of projects are eligible to present?
Our goal is support new ideas, businesses, or projects that are entrepreneurial or solution-oriented by nature. For example, imagine you are starting a clothing company and need money for supplies. Or you might be staring a nonprofit and need money to get your 501c3 status. Perhaps a group of kids at the middle or high school need funding to start their own business. Or what if you are starting a brewery and need funding to cover some of your initial planning expenses…. And so on.
The point of the event is to learn about and support people trying to make our community a better place through a new business, nonprofit, or community effort. Really, it’s not just about the money they will receive; it’s about generating community awareness and support for these great efforts.
How can I submit a project?--APPLICATION FOR THIS DEADLINE IS CLOSED. STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT CYCLE.
On the Gorge Soup website, click the “Apply for a Grant” tab. Here you will find the information you need to apply. Please submit your application via email before January 23, 2012.
Once applications are received, proposals will be reviewed, and up to five applicants will be invited to present at Gorge Soup. The goal of the review will be to ensure a wide variety of projects. If you are invited to present, guidelines for your presentation will be provided prior to the Gorge Soup dinner.
Note: applicants will be required to buy a ticket, attend the event, and make their presentation in order to participate. Tickets will be held for presenters to purchase.
Where did this idea come from?
Gorge Soup is based on Sunday Soup (sundaysoup.org): a national movement of dinners that support community efforts through micro-philanthropy. The initial events that inspired this movement were potluck soup dinners where everyone who attended bought a ticket and all the money went to support the winning presenter. Over the years, as the movement grew, numerous groups have developed and tailored the dinners to best fit their communities.
